Building a Culture of Quality at the Centre of Our Service: A Unique Approach to Implementing Quality Improvement in Decontamination Practice

Caroline is the National Clinical Lead for the Decontamination Safety Programme working with the Quality Improvement Division of the Health Service in Ireland. Caroline is a Nurse by profession and worked as senior Nurse in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care, Orthopaedics and as a Decontamination Advisor. Caroline has a post Grad in Infection Prevention and Control, an MSc in Medical Device Decontamination Science and Diploma in Leadership and Quality Improvement; she is a qualified Lead Auditor an associate lecturer with the Institute of Technology Dublin and is working towards AE(D) certification.

Caroline has implemented ISO13485 into 3 hospitals in Ireland. Caroline is heading up several National Quality Improvement Projects including education for sterile service, primary care and endoscope decontamination practitioners and has developed a Foundation Programme in Quality Improvement for all Acute Care decontamination practitioners. Caroline develops and publishes the National Standards in Ireland.

Em linguagem objetiva a autora faz um resumo de conceitos que tratam de erro, fatores de risco e falhas humanas frente as questões de segurança do paciente.Neste artigo a Caroline apresenta um Programa de Segurança em Descontaminação,onde  ela destaca que atualmente os serviços de CDUs (CMEs) da Irlanda atuam sob  pressão e neste ambiente de estresse o foco na melhoria é fundamental.
A autora afirma “Ao incorporar uma cultura de melhoria da qualidade em todas as CDUs na Irlanda, há o reconhecimento do valioso papel que a descontaminação desempenha no apoio e na condução de melhorias no atendimento clínico seguro. Uma equipe focada no aprendizado é apenas parte de nossas estratégias para construir uma rede nacional de aprendizagem de profissionais de descontaminação apoiada pela web e outras infraestruturas de mídia social.”
Ela também relata os benefícios e resultados da implementação do programa de Melhoria da Qualidade para o serviço de descontaminação hospitalar.
