Banco Mundial defende fundo contra epidemias

O presidente do Banco Mundial (BM), Jim Yong Kim, defendeu, em entrevista ao jornal alemão Handelsblatt, um acordo internacional que permita gerar fundos para enfrentar epidemias como a de Ebola.

“Precisamos de um acordo global, implementado através do Banco Mundial ou de outra instituição, que garanta a disponibilidade de meios financeiros em caso de epidemias graves”, explicou o jornal.

“Considero um dever moral instaurar este projeto durante o meu mandato”, assegura Jim Yong Kim, médico e especialista em doenças infecciosas, que preside o BM desde 2012.

“No início os países ricos contribuem mais, os pobres menos, mas todos participam”, explica.

A epidemia de Ebola resultou em 5.177 mortos, em um total de 14.413 casos registrados em oito países, segundo o último balanço da Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS), divulgado no dia 11 de novembro.
